5 Signs Your Panel Needs an Upgrade

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home’s power. Over time, added appliances, EV chargers, and remodels can push an older panel past its limits.

Watch for breakers that trip often, lights that flicker when large appliances start, a burning smell near the panel, warm or discolored breaker covers, and a panel that is more than 25 years old.

If you notice any of these, call a licensed electrician for an inspection. Some issues are urgent and should not wait.

Why older panels struggle

Many older homes were wired for far fewer loads than we use today. Central air, electric ranges, hot tubs, home offices and EV chargers all draw more power than the panel may have been built for. When demand outgrows capacity, breakers trip, and sometimes parts overheat.

What a panel upgrade involves

  • A licensed electrician inspects the panel, service size and wiring
  • You get a written estimate that includes any permit and inspection
  • The old panel is replaced and the circuits are labeled and tested
  • Power is restored the same day in most cases, and the work is inspected where required

Not every problem needs a new panel

A single breaker that trips on one circuit is often a simple repair. We will tell you honestly which one you have, and we will not sell you a panel you do not need. For help deciding, read our guide on whether you need a panel upgrade or just a new breaker.
