Many homeowners call us worried they need a whole new panel. Sometimes they do. Often they do not. Here is how to tell the difference before you spend money.
Signs it may be a simple fix
- One breaker trips and the rest never do
- The breaker feels loose or will not stay on
- The problem started after you plugged in one new appliance
These are often a worn breaker or an overloaded circuit. A new breaker or a dedicated circuit (starting at $300 per circuit) may solve it.
Signs it may be time for a new panel
- The panel is 25 years or older, or is a brand with a known history of problems
- Fuses, rusted parts, scorch marks or a burning smell
- No open spaces, and you are adding an EV charger, hot tub, addition or workshop
- Lights dim when large appliances start
Panel upgrades start at $2,300 for 100 to 200 amp service. The final price depends on the meter base, the service mast and permits.
Not sure which one you have?
A home electrical inspection (starting at $300) gives you a written picture of the whole system. If you only want an opinion first, text us a photo of your panel with the door open and we will tell you what we see, with no obligation.
