Electrical Permits and Inspections in NC: What to Expect

Permits are one of the most common questions we hear, and one of the easiest places for a shortcut to cost you later. This is general guidance. Rules differ by city and county, so always confirm with your local inspections office.

What usually needs a permit

  • Panel and service changes
  • New circuits and rewiring
  • EV charger installations
  • Hot tubs, pools, detached garages and sheds with power

Small swaps such as replacing a switch or a fan on existing wiring often do not. When in doubt, ask.

What happens after the work

A local inspector checks that the work meets the electrical code. For a service or meter change, your utility (in much of our area, Duke Energy) may also need to disconnect and reconnect power. When your job needs a permit, we handle it and, after the work is completed, we coordinate with you and the permit office to set up the inspection. We will tell you up front if your job needs a utility visit, so there are no surprises on the day.

Why it matters

Unpermitted work can cause trouble when you sell, can complicate an insurance claim after a fire, and may have to be redone. Licensed contractors work to code and stand behind the work.

Questions to ask any electrician

  • Is the estimate in writing, and what does it include?
